Playa de Gulpiyuri, a beach overlooking the sea

Playa-de-Gulpiyuri-SpagnaThe Playa de Gulpiyuri Beach is a small, shell-shaped bay located north of Naves, halfway between Ribadesella and Llanes in Asturias on the northern region of inland Spain. This beach is not visible from the coast and is carefully tucked away in the middle of a green clearing located about 300 feet from the sea.

Playa de Gulpiyuri Beach is about 140 feet long, and though it is quite small it is known for its beautiful golden sand and brisk seashore waves and tranquility.

This small oasis which is located away from the sea, began to form during the Ice Age with the sea slowly making its way through the caves and rocks during high tide. Through an intricate system of underground passageways, saltwater poured into the vortex creating a green clearing which is now a traveler’s haven. Oceanic waters, coming from the nearby Biscay Bay, continuously flow, keeping this small paradise alive.

Gulpiyuri Beach is quite hidden and difficult to reach, but it is accessible through GPS maps so the summer sees quite an influx of tourists to the area. Travelers need to be ready to weather the long roads lined with fields and vegetation in order to reach this small coastal inlet.
