The "Hells of Beppu," the extraordinary hot springs of Japan

Hells of Beppu,Japan

The

Beppu, a coastal city located on the Japanese island of Kyushu, is one of the country's most famous hot spring destinations. Known for its spectacular hot springs, Beppu is home to a unique natural phenomenon: the "Hells of Beppu" (Jigoku), a collection of hot springs that amaze with their colors, extreme temperatures, and incredible features. These "Hells" are not designed for bathing relaxation, but rather offer a breathtaking visual and cultural journey. It’s an experience that immerses visitors in a landscape that seems to come from another planet, where the power of nature is displayed in all its force.

The Hells of Beppu are seven in total, each with a unique personality. One of the most iconic is the Chinoike Jigoku, known as the "Blood Pond Hell," due to its bright red waters rich in iron. This natural spectacle evokes mythological imagery and was used in past centuries for medicinal purposes. Another highlight is the Umi Jigoku, or "Sea Hell," where the deep blue waters, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, create a fascinating contrast. Other attractions include the Oniishibozu Jigoku, named after the distinctive "boils" of gray bubbling mud, and the Tatsumaki Jigoku, a natural geyser that shoots boiling water into the air at regular intervals.

Beppu is not limited to the Hells, but is also the heart of Japan's rich hot spring tradition. The city offers a wide range of typical onsens, where visitors can relax and benefit from the healing properties of the hot waters. You can also purchase souvenirs such as mineral salts and wellness products, as well as taste dishes cooked with steam, considered an authentic delight for the palate. The Hells of Beppu represent not only a journey through surreal landscapes but also an opportunity to understand the deep connection between the Japanese people and the forces of nature. It is a decidedly extreme place, yet one that embodies the perfect balance between unique wild beauty and an unforgettable spirituality.
