The Caves of Saint-Marcel are located in the south of France, just in the heart of the beautiful Ardèche Gorges Nature Reserve. This underground world, accidentally discovered by a hunter in 1836, consists of a huge network of tunnels made up extraordinary rock cathedrals and incredible pools of water created by calcium carbonate growth which form small and beautiful cascading basins.
Registered in the National Heritage for geological and archaeological interest, the cave has been explored and the first 35 miles are listed and considered one of the most important and largest caves in the country. The fascinating path of over 500 meters allows you to explore immense tunnels accompanying visitors with a spectacular play of sounds and lights, a set of
evocative emotions that cross the majestic room of "Fountain of the Virgin", "Gallery of Painters", "Table of the Kings" and the numerous calcite pools that are unique in Europe.
The Saint-Marcel cave, dug through tracks of the fossil river next to the gorges is a real underground treasure. This magical place is often used as a film set location, films include "Les Deux Mondes" by Daniel Cohen and "L'Age de Raison” with Sophie Marceau. The visit is suitable for children, and entrance ticket costs 13 euros per adult and 8 euros for children.
