Wat Rong Khun, The White Temple & Its Light Games

Just about 10 meters from Chiang Rai, located in the northeast of Thailand there is an impressive Wat Rong Khun temple, better known as the White Temple.

The creator and visionary painter Chalermchai Kositpipat intended to create a unique temple to welcome both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. This idea helped him decide to begin the work of reconstructing the original Wat Rong Khun in 1997, funding himself with his own money. The work is still ongoing and the end date is still unknown, delayed even further due to the earthquake of May 5, 2014 which struck the temple causing serious damage.

This work is different from other Buddhist temples thanks to its entirely white color and thanks to the use of glass pieces embedded in the plaster that when reflecting the sun's rays, create a striking and glittering lights game. The white color indicates the purity of the Buddha, while the mirrors spreading light symbolizes its wisdom. Every detail of Wat Rong Khun brings a deep religious symbolism that helps meditate on Buddhist teachings - fleeing worldly temptations, desires, and greed to focus instead on the mind.

Although Wat Rong Khun has been built following the classic canon of Buddhist and Hindu temples, it has strong elements of modernity such as superheroes, movie stars, cartoons and many other modern symbols appearing throughout which comes as quite a surprise to visitors.

The White Temple is one of the most visited attractions in Chiang Rai and among the most important Thai temples. It’s no surprise how popular this temple is due to its magical atompshere.
