The Temple of Wat Samphran, the Tower Wrapped in the Coils of a Dragon

Giant-Dragon-Temple-Wat-Samphran-ThailandiaThe Wat Samphran Temple is an unusual and mysterious building. It is an off the beaten track tourist attraction located in the Sam Phran District in the Nakhon Pathom province of Thailand. It is a 17-storey, rose-colored tower which reaches a height of 80 meters. It is surrounded by a huge, beautiful green dragon.

Giant-Dragon-Temple-Wat-Samphran-ThailandiaThe temple is only 25 miles from Bangkok and its origins are still unknown. The tower appears abandoned, perhaps due to an alleged sack in the mid-1990s which involved a Buddhist abbot.

Giant-Dragon-Temple-Wat-Samphran-ThailandiaWat Samphran's Tower of the Dragon is indeed a place of worship, but it does not respect the common design standards of Thai times, which usually separates the area dedicated to Buddha and the monk’s residency. Some tourists say that the upper floors of the tower are inhabited by a religious group.

Giant-Dragon-Temple-Wat-Samphran-ThailandiaThe entire complex consists of small temples and beautiful monuments, including a bronze statue of the giant Buddha. The dragon is built of iron and glass fiber, and is completely hollow inside. It is void of light, but it is navigable on foot. There are stairs, though most tourists prefer to use the elevator. This is a unique and truly extraordinary temple surrounded by mystery which invites anyone to conquer its peak. The view from the top is breathtaking and worth the climb.
