Okunoshima,Japan
Okunoshima is a small island of about 700,000 square meters located in the inner Sea of Seto, Japan between the cities of Hiroshima and Shikoku. Named Usagi Jima or Rabbit Island, it is now famous for its large colony of wonderful rabbits in need of pampering.
Before becoming a rabbit paradise however, Okunoshima was the secret place of a military site for poisonous gas production to be used as a chemical weapon. Between 1929 and 1945 it had even been deleted from maps to keep it isolated and ensure complete secrecy. Okunoshima was a true fortress which was kept hidden for 16 years by the resident population and by everyone employed in the program.
According to some sources, the rabbits were used as guinea pigs to test the effects of gas and released by workers at the end of World War II with the defeat of Japan. Other statements claim that they were eliminated in mass and those present on the island were reintroduced in 1971 by a group of students on a school trip. The Poison Gas Museum was inaugurated in 1988 as a remembrance of those terrible years, documenting the use of gas during the war. It is visited by 10,000 students every year.
Today, this colony consists of more than 300 specimens of rabbits that freely float throughout every corner of the island, protected by predators like dogs and cats that are not allowed on the island. Although wild, the rabbits are very much used to the presence of men who will approach you quietly in search of food.
