Tokyo,Japan
Located 240 miles from Tokyo, and surrounded by the waters of the Philippine Sea lies Aogashima, a volcanic island belonging to the Japanese archipelago of Izu which is home to 200 people living inside an active volcano.
The island originated from volcanic fragments of four underwater calderas with a surface of about 5.5 miles. Its perimeter is made up of a large caldera called Ikenosawa which measures a diameter of 1 mile. Inside, it houses the Maruyama, a volcanic cone smaller than 200 meters tall, and is considered still active.
The last great eruption of this volcano was recorded to be around 1781-1785, destroying half the population taking almost 50 years to fully recover before some daring residents returned to live on this beautiful island.
Today, despite the volcanic activity being almost latent, the inhabitants of Aogashima lead a quiet existence, without fear. They take advantage of the benefits of the heat from the volcano which act as hot springs and natural saunas making it somewhat of a paradise island.
The pillars of Aogashima's economy are fishing, agriculture and more importantly, salt production. The island is still particularly wild today, with the small-town center rising exclusively on the outside of the volcano with tourists arriving annually to provide a small part of the seasonal income.
Lack of natural harbors makes the island difficult to access so Aogashima can only be reached by ferry when sea conditions allow it or by helicopter from nearby Hachijojima island which is linked by daily flights to Tokyo.
