The Blue Pond, The Spell of the Color Changing Lake

The Blue Pond is a small, beautiful lake on Hokkaido Island, Japan. It is a magical and enchanting place, a sort of water mirror that changes color according to the season and even the time of day.

The shades of its nuances can range from turquoise to blue to emerald green - almost unrealistic colors that change according to weather conditions and light reflections.

The trees reflected in the water give the place a particularly exciting touch, especially in winter when the blue of the lake contrasts with the white of the snow deposited on the branches.

Located on the left bank of the Bieigawa River, southeast of the city of Biei this "prodigious basin" is not a work of Mother Nature. It is instead an artificial lake created by man in 1988 following the awakening of the nearby Tokachidake volcano. A dam was built where the river water began to accumulate to give rise to the lake, to protect the area from eruption.

The explanation for why its color changes is still unclear. Some scholars hypothesize that the cause could be the large amount of aluminum hydroxide in the water which is not very soluble and therefore able to reflect the sunlight. The color on the other hand is attributed to sulfur and coal, which makes the stones and sand of the backdrop white, highlighting the blue tint.

The Blue Pond was opened to tourists in 2010 and photographer Kent Shiraishi managed to immortalize the almost supernatural beauty of this phenomenon through a few spectacular shots, winning the 2011 National Geographic Edition photo competition. Apple has also contributed to the reputation of the Blue Pond by making it the pre-set background image of OS X Mountain Lion.
