Houtou Wan, the village that conquered nature

Houtou-Wan-Gouqi-Island-CinaHoutou Wan is a small village located on the island of Gouqi. It is one of the 394 islands known as Shengsi Islands which is the largest in China's Zhoushan Archipelago

Just 50 years ago, Houtou Wan was a thriving fishing village, a lively commercial center that was gradually abandoned by its residents, due to the fishing industry's crisis after the development of industries. Large boats have become too big to enter the small marina so all the inhabitants have been forced to move elsewhere.

Houtou Wan today is covered with vegetation so much so that most of the homes have been completely swallowed by nature, wrapped in soft, climbing plants that have covered walls, roofs, stairs, doors, and every ruin left standing. The spectacle to visitors is that of an enchanted and melancholic landscape which somehow gives an idea of the progression of time.

Some of these houses are still home to inhabitants such as older fishermen who, despite the difficulties do not want to leave their place of birth and have decided to spend their last years in serenity.
