Flores,Indonesia
The Kelimutu volcano is home to beautiful volcanic lakes which are located on the summit of Mount Kelimutu, in the enchanting Island of Flores in Indonesia. Located side by side and divided only by a thin strip of rock, the three lakes offer a unique spectacle - an ever-changing color scheme.
The lakes take on shades of different colors, ranging from brown to blue, red, turquoise, green and even black. This phenomenon occurs only in this place and despite the fact that no scientific studies have ever properly been carried out, it is thought to be caused by the outbreak of underground gases and the chemical reactions of minerals present in the water.
According to ancient beliefs of the local population, the color variation of the three lakes of Kelimutu depends on restless spirits. It is considered a sacred place where the souls of the dead find eternal rest. The lake at the western end of the volcano is called Tiwu Ata Mbupu and within it rest the spirits of the elders who have lived a just and fair life. The other two lakes, close to each other, are the Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, a gathering place for young souls and the Tiwu Ata Polo is the lake which is home to evil spirits.
Their uniqueness lies in the color variation that unlike other volcanic lakes simply cannot be predicted. Each day the lakes surprise locals and visitors with a new color landscape wrapped in the charm and mysteries of its ever-changing characteristics.
