Pura Tanah Lot, a Temple Dedicated to the Divinity of the Sea

Pura-Tanah-Lot-BaliPura Tanah Lot is a Hindu temple located on the rocky island of Tanah Lot located southwest of the island of Bali. Accessible only at low tide, it is part of the Seven Temples of the Sea built along the coast between the 15th and 16th centuries. Tanah Lot, which translated from Balinese means "Land of the Sea", is certainly the most famous temple dedicated to the deity of the sea.

Pura-Tanah-Lot-BaliThis temple is quite unique for many reasons, some of which are its unique location, its dependence on tide times, and its deep legends that surround the story of the island. According to island beliefs, poisonous sea snakes live at the foot of the rock whose purpose it is to protect the temple from demons, thieves and evil spirits.

Pura-Tanah-Lot-BaliSome legends tell that this sacred place was founded by the priest Danghyang Nirarta, who came to the island during one of his pilgrimages to spread Hinduism. He spent only one night there and before continuing on in his journey, he invited local fishermen to build a sanctuary where they could worship the sea gods. Under the promontory there is also a cave from which an unusual source of fresh water gushes, although the temple is surrounded by salt water from the ocean. This source is considered "sacred" and "purifying" and can only be accessed by faithful Hindus.
