The Crowley Lake majestic columns are considered a true geological masterpiece, located along the shores of Lake Crowley, a water reservoir on the Owens River in California. The origins of the phenomenon are still enshrined in a veil of mystery which has been studied by experts for quite some time.
The lake was created in 1941 with the construction of the Long Valley Dam by the Los Angeles Water and Electricity Department. When the lake level drastically reduced, these rock formations emerged revealing all their splendor.
More than 5,000 columns of porous rock, 20 meters high and with a structure that varies in shape, color and size. Some are grayish in color, others pink and some are straight, while others are bent.
Recent studies by a group of geologists from the University of California who analyzed some portions of the formations through the use of X-rays and electronic microscopes, led to the discovery of tiny interior spaces created by an erosion-resistant mineral composition.
So, the hypothesis came about that the columns are the result of the fusion between the cold water and the ash caused by a violent volcanic explosion that happened 700,000 years ago. It is also estimated that in addition to the columns already discovered and scattered in an area of three square miles, many of them are still buried.
While waiting for the mystery of this natural temple to be resolved, visitors simply continue to admire the breathtaking scenery of Crowley Lake.
