The Crater Lake is located in Oregon right in the heart of the homonymous Crater Lake National Park. It has an area of 20 square miles and a depth of over 594 meters. In addition to being the deepest lake in the United States and one of the deepest in the world, it boasts the peculiarity of being in the caldera of an inactive volcano.
After a great eruption of the ancient volcano of Mount Mazama, the mountain collapsed creating a strong depression in which a lake basin was created by the waters from snow. The Crater Lake is about two thousand meters high and is powered exclusively by rains and melting snow. No river or streams supply its waters.
The snowy source of water and its depth make it one of the clearest and bluest lakes in the world, a blue so intense and crystalline that it seems unnatural. The water is so blue, that it is reported that when the first visitors photographed the lake and sent their photos to Kodak to print, they received a refund for their photos because it seemed that the blue of the lake was so unusual that it was thought to be a mistake in the printing process.
The two small islands on the lake, Wizard Island and on the tip of the volcanic cone and Phantom Ship, a small rocky island, make this place even more spectacular. The Crater Lake is a dreamlike setting, framed by dense fir trees and pine trees, populated by bears, lynxes, and hawks, giving the landscape a fascination of rare beauty which is too stunning to resist.
