Son Doong,Vietnam
The Hang Son Doong is a majestic cave located in Vietnam within the Phong Nha-ke Bang National Park. The cave contains a 3-mile tunnel which can reach a height of 250-meters and a width of 200-meters. It is constructed of a network of 150 caves and hidden inside is a large jungle which could hold a whole block of 40-floor skyscrapers. The dimensions of this cave have been measured with extreme precision thanks to laser-based techniques.
This secret world of a cave originates between 2 and 5million years ago, by the erosive action of the waters on limestone rock from the mountain. It has been nicknamed "the grotto of the mountain river". The first to discover this cave was a peasant in 1991, but only in April 2009, did an Anglo-Vietnamese team begin to really explore it. This team of explorers found themselves in front of a truly exciting scene - a set of caves, tunnels, open spaces with beaches, lakes and rivers all rich in animal and plant microcosms.
The cave, besides concealing many kinds of vegetation which are not yet cataloged, is also populated with insects and snakes, which can be appetizing prey for monkeys who can enter the cavity through small slits on the ceiling.
Since 2013, the first guided tours for tourists have started which allow tourists to visit the safe part of the cave.
Exploration has not yet ended. We hope that the new wonders of this subterranean world, with the surreal and mysterious charm that only Mother Nature can give, will soon be revealed in their entirety.
