Vulcano Thrihnukagigur,Islanda
Thrihnukagigur Volcano is located in Iceland, just under 22 miles from Reykjavik. It is the only volcano in the world which you can enter inside to admire the bright colors of the magma chamber. This is an extraordinary experience which gives its audience a feeling of journeying into the center of the earth.
The Thrihnukagigur, which has been dormant for about 4,000 years, stands at about 500 meters above sea level and was discovered in 1974 by the explorer Árni B Stefánssont. It has been possible to visit the inside since 2012, with organized 45-minute excursions into the crater as well as a descent of 198 meters into the base of the magma chamber through a special basket lift. The excursions are done in groups of 13 people accompanied by expert guides. Once the descent is finished, visitors can spend an accompanied hour in complete freedom, discovering the spectacular shades of rocks. The area is famous for its gradations of color which, according to their chemical composition, range from red to cobalt blue, passing from green and all shades of yellow.
In addition to being a tourist attraction, access to the chamber allows scientists to study and monitor the activity of the volcano. There is risk that an eruption or a sudden earthquake could shut the access to this space, where once lava would boil. However, as of now, travelers with a fair amount of courage will be able to witness this truly incredible geological spectacle.
All information about the excursions can be found on the official website.
