The house on the Drina river, the most popular refuge in Serbia

Located in the middle of the Drina River, in Serbia lies a lonely little house perched on the spike of a rock surrounded by water. The area is just near the city of Bajina Basta, on the edge of the beautiful natural landscape of the Tara National Park. It has become famous all over the world thanks to a National Geographic cover photo taken by the Hungarian Irene Becker and published in 2012.

The house on the Drina River was built in 1968 by a group of young friends looking for a quiet and secluded place to build a retreat for sunbathing after a good swim. The boys began to transport wood from an old disused warehouse, using makeshift boats and canoes to navigate the river, as well as using the current to float over some of the larger pieces of wood. And thus was born one of the country's most iconic wooden houses.

Damaged several times by river floods, the house has been rebuilt several times. The house remains thanks to the continuous struggle and tenacity of the inhabitants of Bajna Basta who are determined to protect and repair it. Today, this small oasis is a tourist destination who are intrigued by the particular history of the charming and stubborn little house that does not bend to the weather and the force of one of the most impetuous rivers in Europe.
