Santo Stefano di Sessanio, the most charming medieval village in Abruzzo

Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a true medieval enchantment, as if straight out of a fairy tale. This small gem, perched at an altitude of 1,250 meters in the heart of Abruzzo, nestled among the rolling hills of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. Walking through its narrow streets, you’re transported back in time to an era when the clatter of carts and the voices of merchants filled the air. The perfectly preserved village is characterized by narrow cobblestone alleys, stone arches, and defensive towers, all of which tell the story of a time when Santo Stefano was an important commercial hub. During the Middle Ages, the village was an integral part of the feudal system under the Barony of Carapelle, controlled by the Medici family of Florence. Drawn to the region’s abundant wool resources, the Tuscan lords turned Santo Stefano into a center for wool production and trade, exporting it to major Italian cities.

Like many other Italian villages, Santo Stefano di Sessanio experienced a period of decline during the 20th century, as many of its inhabitants migrated to cities in search of better job opportunities. By the end of the century, the village was almost entirely abandoned, with houses in ruins and a population reduced to just a few dozen residents. However, a turning point came in the early 2000s when Italo-Swedish entrepreneur Daniele Kihlgren decided to bet on Santo Stefano and restore it to its former glory. Kihlgren, captivated by the untouched beauty of the village, embarked on a restoration project based on the concept of the "albergo diffuso”, turning abandoned homes into a unique hotel known as Sextantio. The houses, restored using original techniques and materials, have been transformed into charming tourist accommodations, where the signs of the past have been carefully preserved in every detail.

Thanks to this project, Santo Stefano di Sessanio has been given new life and is now experiencing a second youth, with artisan shops, restaurants serving traditional Abruzzese cuisine, and an atmosphere that enchants everyone who steps foot there. Despite its small size, Santo Stefano di Sessanio offers much to see and do, with numerous activities allowing visitors to discover not only its architectural beauty but also the stunning natural landscape surrounding it.
Through its alleys, stone houses, and breathtaking scenery, the village tells a story of rebirth and resilience, showing how even the smallest places can have a big impact. The simplicity of small-town life, direct contact with the locals, the authenticity of the food, and the unspoiled beauty of the territory make this place a must-see destination for those seeking a location that combines history, culture, nature, and authenticity.
