The Winebox Valparaiso, an ecological hotel in Chile made of recycled containers

The Wine Box is South America's first eco-friendly hotel built entirely from recycled shipping containers.This unique hotel is located in Chile in the lively port city of Valparaiso which is considered Latin America’s capital of graffiti. It is one of the most interesting cities in the world characterized by its original and colorful architecture. Valparaiso, or "Valpo" as its inhabitants call it, is famous for the splendid murals scattered along all the streets and the steep stairways of its many hills. It is by far one of the most popular destinations for street art fans.



The Wine Box Hotel is one of the tourist attractions of this art city, and is located in the residential area of ??Cerro Mariposas, a short distance from the well-known tourist districts of Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre. The hotel is a project realized with 25 decommissioned naval cargo containers which were transformed into 21 rooms including a reception room, dining area and two splendid terraces with panoramic views of the city and the ocean. The structure represents the perfect fusion of innovation and sustainability and is the first ecological hotel in the southern hemisphere to produce its own wine and the first registered winery in Valparaiso. It is the only project that has won six prizes in the Chilean edition of Great Wine Capitals, for its innovative wine tourism experience.



The artists behind this colorful modular building are Camilla and Grant Phelps, two architects and passionate oenologists whose mission was to not only offer alternative accommodation to the traditional architecture of modern hotels but also to be an example to their guests on how to take care of the planet. Reuse and attention to the environment, aimed at living sustainably is possible through the art of recycling, which is now becoming increasingly relevant for travelers.
