The Enchanted City, one of Spain’s most spectacular sites

The Enchanted City is a true geological marvel, a place where nature and imagination meet to create a unique and unforgettable experience. This wonder, nestled in the heart of Spain, is located about 18 miles northeast of the city of Cuenca, in the Serranía de Cuenca mountains. It is part of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, a protected area covering over 180,000 acres. Declared a site of national interest in 1929 and a World Heritage Site in 1966, the Enchanted City is famous for its extraordinary rock formations, the result of millions of years of erosion. Limestone, dolomite, and flint have been sculpted by wind and water over time, creating structures that resemble human figures, animals, and everyday objects.

Among the most famous rocks, you'll find the "Tormo Alto," a gigantic stone column standing alone, and the "Cara de Hombre," a rock that resembles a man’s face. As you stroll along the park's paths, you can admire structures often accompanied by evocative names that spark the imagination, such as "Los Barcos," which resemble ships in a petrified sea, or "El Perro," which looks like a vigilant dog. In addition to the impressive natural sculptures, the Enchanted City is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The park is covered with typical regional vegetation, including pines, oaks, and junipers that provide shade and a habitat for many animal species. Among the site’s inhabitants are various bird species, including the golden eagle and the Eurasian eagle-owl, as well as mammals like the fox and the wild boar.

During the Spring and Summer, the park is filled with wildflowers, adding a touch of color to the rocky landscape. Additionally, the presence of aromatic plants like thyme and lavender fills the air with pleasant and intoxicating scents. The Enchanted City is an ideal place for a day outdoors, suitable for all ages. The well-marked and accessible trails allow for easy exploration of all the formations. Each route is enhanced with informational panels that explain the area's geology, flora, and fauna, as well as the local legends associated with the rocks. The sculptures of the Enchanted City are a magnificent example of the power and beauty of natural processes. Their formation, which began a staggering 90 million years ago, continues to tell yet another unique and captivating chapter in the geological history of the Earth.

The park is open year-round, but the best times to visit are spring and fall. At the entrance to the Enchanted City, you’ll find parking, an information center, a café-restaurant, and picnic areas.
