Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Great Wall of Snow

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is an incredible 22-mile route that winds through walls of snow that can reach 20 meters in height. It is a mountain road that, at an altitude of 2,450 meters on Mount Tateyama, crosses the prefectures of Toyama and Nagano, knowns as the snowiest areas in all of Japan.

The Japanese Alps are known for their abundant snowfalls and this passage, called "Yuki no Ootani" (translated "big valley of the snow"), is rendered unnavigable from mid-November to the beginning of April. It is so impenetrable, that it takes three months of work in order to make the road accessible for the Spring. This work is carried out by special snow plows, with the help of powerful excavators and bulldozers.

The road, formed by a double lane, has been open to the public since 1971 and since then has allowed passage for skiers, cars and buses. It is undoubtedly one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country, built in total respect for the environment to protect the area's wonderful natural heritage. Along the way there are also several refreshment points, including hotels. The best time to admire this great white wall is between April and May, when the walls reach their maximum height.
