Charles Kuonen, the Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge in the World

Charles Kuonen is a Swiss building inaugurated in the summer of 2017 and hold the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is about 500 meters in length and connects Grächen and Zermatt and offers breathtaking views of the Bernese Alps with a lovely backdrop of the Cervino Mountain. The pathway is an adventurous 85 meters in height and can be crossed by hikers in just 10 minutes, rather than the alternative 4 hours of walking.



The bridge cost 750,000 francs and was built in just two and a half months by Swissrope, a company specializing in the construction of several suspension bridges in Switzerland. The structure is entirely made of steel and is supporting with cables that weigh 8 tons, minimizing the pendulum effect.



The bridge is only 2 feet wide and is a two-way bridge. It is recommended to not cross the bridge during bad weather such as thunderstorms as the cliff below is clearly visible in some portions of the pathway.



The Charles Kuonen or “EuropaBrueche” situation on the “Europaweg” reaches an altitude of 1600 to 2200 meters and replaces a previous bridge which was damaged by a landslide shortly after its opening in 2010. The Kounen is not the highest bridge in the world, but it is nonetheless a technological masterpiece. This modern walkway overlooks a deep valley where you can admire the breathtaking landscape of Switzerland.
