The Valley of Butterflies, a natural treasure of Turkey

Turkey has incredible beauty, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes. Among its most extraordinary and lesser-known natural wonders is the Valley of Butterflies (Kelebekler Vadisi), a true hidden paradise on the country's southwestern coast in the Fethiye region. This enchanting beach, nestled between the steep cliffs of Mount Babadağ and the Mediterranean Sea, is named after the more than 80 species of butterflies that inhabit the valley, including the rare Jersey tiger butterfly (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis). Reachable only by sea or a challenging hiking trail, the beach has remained relatively untouched by mass tourism, maintaining its wild and natural atmosphere.

The Butterfly Bay hosts a variety of unique flora and fauna. In addition to the butterflies, the entire valley is covered with lush vegetation that includes oleanders, citrus trees, and endemic plants. This ecological microcosm creates an ideal habitat for butterflies and many insects, birds, and small mammals. Inside the valley are spectacular waterfalls fed by the spring waters of Mount Babadağ. One of the most exciting hikes is undoubtedly the one that leads to the main waterfall, where you cross dense vegetation with the relaxing sound of flowing water. The valley also offers the possibility to camp and engage in various outdoor activities such as trekking, canyoning, and canoeing. There are designated camping areas where you can pitch tents and spend the night under the stars, listening to waves crashing on the shore. The calm, crystal-clear waters that bathe the beach are ideal for snorkeling and diving. The richness of marine life, from colorful fish to majestic sea turtles, makes every dive an unforgettable underwater adventure.

The most common and convenient way to reach the valley is by sea. During the summer, numerous tourist boats depart daily from the nearby village of Ölüdeniz, famous for its white sandy beach and turquoise waters. The more adventurous can instead take a rather steep trail from the village of Faralya. Tourists are required to respect the environment, avoiding disturbing the butterflies and leaving litter. Additionally, pesticides and other chemicals are strictly controlled to preserve biodiversity. The Valley of Butterflies is a magical place that offers a deep connection with nature, one of the best-kept secrets of this extraordinary country.
