The Sverd I Fjell are giant swords in stone located in Hafrsfjord, a suburb of the city of Stavanger in Norway. It is an prominent monument created be the Norwegian sculptor Fritz Røed, in commemoration of the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, when the Viking King Harald Hårfagre unified Norway for the first time under one crown.
Inaugurated by King Olav V of Norway in 1983, the 3 bronze swords are 10 meters high and firmly anchored in rock, from which it will never be removed. The largest sword represents the winner, Harald and the smaller the two represent the defeated contenders.
Harald reigned from 872 to 930, and is known in history as the first king of a united Norway.
There are crowns placed on top of the swords, which stand solemn to symbolize the hope of a lasting peace, representing the districts which took part in the battle. This is a medieval jewel of Norway, which represents the history and culture of the ancient Viking fighters.
