Le Vieux Moulin, A Romantic Old Mill on the Banks of the Seine

Built in the 16th century on the pylons of an ancient medieval bridge, the Le Vieux Moulin is located near Vernon, the quaint town which lies along the banks of the Seine in the north of France.

Originally, the bridge had five mills which were used for processing corn from the cultivation of the nearby Vexin plateau. Each of the mills was equipped with a hydraulic wheel that could be lowered or raised to the water level. Le Vieux Moulin is the only mill left standing, hovering between two pylons of a bridge that no longer exists.

The bridge, built by King Philip II in the 12th century, despite having been covered by four towers 20 meters high, and protected by a wooden drawbridge as well as being surrounded by a moat was in any case almost completely destroyed during bombing. In 1651, the floods swept away some of the pillars and the supporting arches collapsed, making the bridge unviable. Two hundred years later it was rebuilt but again destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War and again during World War II. The old mill also brought serious damage, but its collapse was avoided thanks to the French intervention that made it their symbol.

Today, the mill has been completely recovered and, despite being a private property that cannot be visited inside, it can still be admired in all its grandeur from the meadows along the banks of the Seine.
