Lake Bogoria,Kenya
Lake Bogoria is located in Rift Valley, an African tectonic pit that crosses Kenya. This volcanic lake is characterized by the strong presence of geysers which add an alkaline and saline nature to the waters. This basis spans approximately 21 miles and runs 10 meters deep, but it is special for another reason – it is the place where colonies of pink flamingos choose to gather!
The chemical composition of the waters mixed with the temperatures of this basin, create the perfect environment for an alga called arthrospira platensis which so happens to be a favorite of pink flamingos!
These beautiful birds are fairly new to Lake Bogoria, and have only arrived in recent years, having left the shores of nearby Rift Valley lakes such as Nakuru to flee the drought and water changes. They have flocked in numbers, so much so that there seem to be over a million flamingos covering the entire lake, making it an immense and spectacular pink spectacle!
The geysers of the area are many, and they continue to erupt with heights of up to 5 meters tall. This means that these enchanting pink flamingos are there to stay, at least for the time being. And make for perfect bird-watching for visitors.
