Cerro Negro Volcano, the Epic Ash Boaring Destination for Thrill Seekers

The Cero Negro is one of the eleven active volcanos which lies in the surrounding areas of León Nicaragua. It is the youngest of all the active volcanos in Central America, and has had a recorded 23 eruptions with the last eruption dating back to August 1999.This particular eruption created a lava flow which reached 300 meters in height, creating a think layer of ash which created a black sand surface layer of ash along one side of the volcano. The steep descent of the volcano makes it a perfect place for ash surfing at high speeds with both surfboards and snowboards!



Ash boarding, also known as “volcano boarding” or “volcano surfing” or even “ash sliding” is considered an extreme sport and is practiced only be experienced surfers or snowboarders. It is no mystery that there is quite a high risk of falls which can result in serious injuries or abrasions, considering the surface of the volcano is hardened lava ash. Visitors can rent special boards made of wood and metal, something like a sled. In order to ensure maximum safety, the volcano is equipped with the appropriate gear, surfing outfits, goggles, elbow and knee protectors and of course trained guides.

The highest point to begin the ash-boarding path is about 500 meters high, along the slope of Cerro Negro. It’s no easy feat to get to the top as it is a steep hike and temperatures can get quite hot the closer you get to the top. The trek to the top of the ash boarding path takes about an hour, and some stretches demand hand-climbing. All of this with must be done with your carrying along your equipment. The journey is rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of all of the other surrounding volcanoes in the area. Then the daring descent begins!
