The Caño Cristales River is located in Colombia, about 100 miles from Bogotà. Hidden in the Serranía de La Macarena National Park, just between the Andes and the Amazon, this river is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world and is often called the “rainbow river” or the “river of 5 colors” as it changes colors very quickly, forming a spectacular natural show worth visiting the area to see.

This magical show happens during the change of season, between September and November and it is due to the tides which allow sunlight to beam directly on the water fauna which grow between the rock formations. The heat from the sun illuminate this vegetation and the colors which it emanates are beautiful shades of violet, magenta and blue. The rest of the colors are thanks to the Macarenia Clavigera, a particular alghe which is transported from miles away due to the current, giving us beautiful colors such as yellow, green, red and black.

Caño Cristales flows about 60 miles until opening up into the waters of Guyabero. This river is a natural phenomenon, a paradise of rich flora and fauna making it a Colombian monument. This area was once isolated and inaccessible to tourism due Farc guerrillas, but today it is a thriving area for anyone to visit thanks to the pact signed by Juan Manuel Santos, ending the guerrilla movement. Visitors come from all around to admire this splendid natural wonder.
