Széchenyi Bath, One of Europe's Largest Spas

The Széchenyi Bath is located in the heart of the Városliget Park which features wonderful outdoor pools, where the water flows from an artesian well dating back to 1870 at a temperature of 169°F, allowing you to dive in even in the winter.

Széchenyi's Spa is the most famous and oldest of the city as well as one of the largest in Europe. It is located in the heart of the Varosliget Park and is within walking distance of the central Heroes Square, boasting 3 outdoor pools.

The bath was already a spa in 1881, and was built in the neo-baroque style in 1909 but completed only 4 years later and named "Széchenyi" in honor of Conte István Széchenyi. At that time, the bathrooms were divided among men and women, but after the 1927 enlargement both sexes were allowed to bathe in all the pools without any distinction.



The water comes from an artesian source excavated at a depth of 1,250 meters that flows at a temperature of 165°F -170°F. The steam generated, in contrast to the outside temperature, gives a unique atmosphere especially in the winter. In one of the large outdoor pools, you can watch the surreal show of men playing chess within the steaming waters. Visitors can also find "cooler" pools with temperate ranging from 79°F to 93°F.



These thermal waters popular because of their natural characteristics which are rich in calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, sodium and sulfate and contain a considerable amount of fluoride and metabolic acid. This water is recommended for locomotor disorders, arthritis, orthopedic and post-traumatic therapies. The spa also operates as a day hospital ward.

The Széchenyi thermal bath is fascinating from the entrance as it has a dome decorated with a beautiful mosaic in glass, and this is just one of the many which adorn this small paradise of relaxation.
