Campo de Piedra Pómez,Argentina
Campo de Piedra Pómez is an immense expanse of volcanic rock, a lunar landscape characterized by a vast and ancient flow of pumice from the eruption of Volcán Blanco. This natural wonder is located in the north of Argentina, at the foot of the Andean mountain range of the Antofagasta de la Sierra region, in the province of Catamarca. The entire area is made up of a series of splendid dunes and hills with a surreal appearance that plays with colors emitting a wild and primordial charm.
This extraordinary landscape is made up of over 5,000 pumice stone formations and covers an area of 10 square miles at an altitude ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 meters. It is a desert area of great geological interest, created from the solidification of the ash poured by the intense activity of the surrounding volcanoes. It is then shaped by the wind to transform it into a gigantic carpet of light and porous stone. It is testimony to nature, the one and only true protagonist of the creation of unique and surprising masterpieces.
Campo de Piedra Pómez is a protected natural area, a complex and jagged place that needs to be visited safely, preferably accompanied by expert guides equipped with a 4x4 off-road vehicle. The site, usually reachable from the town of El Penon, does not require entry costs, however it is essential to know that, due to the frequent accumulation of pumice dust continuously raised by the wind, the path of the slopes changes from year to year.
In this infinite field of sculptures, visitors will be inside one of the most fascinating corners of Argentina, a must see destination for lovers of the most remote and evocative landscapes on our planet.
